You can't buy your way into an answer
In twenty years of reporting, nobody ever bought a story from me. People tried.
What actually worked was unglamorous. A company had something true and specific: a number nobody else had, a person willing to say something real on camera, a thing that had genuinely changed. That got on air. Budget never did.
Advertorial content accounts for 0.3% of AI citations. Three-tenths of one percent. Edelman said the quiet part out loud launching their AI-search practice this spring: “You can’t buy your way to the top of an AI-generated answer.” When the biggest PR firm on earth builds a product line on that sentence, take it seriously.
Here’s why it holds. Paid placement is a transaction between you and one publisher. What these models reward is consensus across many publishers who have no relationship with each other. You can rent a headline. You cannot rent a pattern. For twenty years a big enough budget bought visibility in almost any channel. That escape hatch is closed on the organic side.
So we don’t sell placement. We find the true, specific thing and then we go make it: the interview, the number, the piece, the segment. That is the difference between us and an agency that hands you a strategy deck and wishes you luck on execution. The Storytelling Collab is a room of reporters, producers and editors. We don’t advise on the work. We produce the work.
For two decades the answer to “how do we get covered” was “be worth covering.” Turns out that’s still the answer. It’s just being enforced by a machine now.
We help companies get named in that answer. That’s the whole job.
