AI traffic is smaller. It's also much better.

The newsletter I wrote from Milan reached a fraction of our broadcast audience. It was the most valuable thing I made all winter.

Readership up 52% over our Paris coverage. Click-through to NBC Boston’s stories up 369%. A smaller room, but everyone in it had chosen to be there. Anyone who has worked in news long enough learns to stop confusing the size of an audience with the quality of one.

Everybody right now is panicking about the traffic they lost to AI. Almost nobody is looking at the traffic they gained. Adobe analyzed more than a trillion visits to US retail sites: AI-referred traffic is up 138% year over year and roughly fourteen-fold since October 2024. But the volume isn’t the story. The behavior is. AI-referred visitors now convert 54% better than everyone else, spend 53% more time on site, and view 23% more pages. A year ago that same traffic converted about 50% worse. The flip happened fast.

It makes sense. Somebody arriving from a search result is still shopping. Somebody arriving from an AI answer already had the comparison conversation, got a recommendation, and clicked through to confirm it. They’re not at the top of the funnel. They’re near the bottom, holding a referral.

That conversation is made of stories, not keywords. It is a model repeating what it has read about you, in its own words, to somebody who trusts it. Our entire practice is aimed at that one sentence: what gets said about you when you are not in the room. We have been in that business for twenty years. The only thing that changed is the room.

Stop benchmarking this channel on sessions. Benchmark it on whether you’re the brand being recommended in the conversation that happens before the click. That’s the conversation The Storytelling Collab exists to win.

We help companies get named in that answer. That’s the whole job.
